WhatsTheMoat was born from a simple frustration: high-quality fundamental research is locked behind expensive institutional subscriptions, and free alternatives are either shallow screeners or opinion-heavy forums. As a self-directed investor, I wanted a tool that would do what I do manually — but faster, deeper, and without the cognitive biases that trip up every human analyst.
So I built it. WhatsTheMoat uses a proprietary 9-phase fundamental analysis framework that mirrors how the best value investors think. It evaluates business models, competitive moats, financial health, growth runways, valuations, and risks — producing institutional-quality research reports in under 60 seconds.
The Framework
Our 9-phase framework is inspired by the analytical discipline of Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Peter Lynch, Benjamin Graham, Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, and other legendary investors. Each phase builds on the previous — you understand the business before the financials, and the financials before the valuation. This order matters because a number without context is just noise.
The framework scores every stock on a 1-5 scale across six dimensions: Business Quality, Competitive Moat, Financial Health, Growth Runway, Valuation Attractiveness, and Risk Profile. The result is not a buy or sell recommendation — it is a structured foundation for your own decision-making.
